National Puppy Day Celebrations

National Puppy Day is in its 10th year, and although there may not be official festivities, there are individual celebrations all over the country. Every time a puppy is adopted from a shelter or rescued from an abusive or neglectful situation, it is a reason to celebrate! There is a serious canine overpopulation problem in the United States, with over 70,000 puppies being born annually - but nearly 4 million dogs surrendered to shelters each year as well. Although puppies have a better chance of being adopted than older dogs, they are still vying for attention from puppy mills and for-profit breeders. National Puppy Day aims to encourage people to visit their local Pueblo shelter when considering a new furry member of the family, in order to give them the life they deserve. St. Patrick’s Day Customs and Flowers

St. Patrick's Day is a Roman Catholic feast day that has evolved into a cultural celebration - and not only among the Irish! It is said that on March 17th, everyone is Irish, and so it would seem based upon the parades, the "wearing of the green", and the many festivities surrounding the day. Whether you will be drinking green beer or eating corned beef and cabbage, you'll be joining with over 36 million people who claim Irish descent in the United States. And if you would like to dress up your home or office with a bit of green as well, look to the experts at Campbell's Flowers - we have green flowers and plants that will help you to celebrate with the best of them! Did You Know? St. Patrick was not Irish. He was a young man in Gret Britain when he was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland. After his escape, he became a Catholic priest and returned to Ireland to be a missionary. He is credited with bringing Christianity to the country. History of Mardi Gras Celebrations

Although many present-day celebrations represent an integration of pagan and Christian traditions, Mardi Gras may be the most interesting - given that the two influences are still very distinct. The origin of the revelry dates back to ancient celebrations of spring and fertility, but when Rome adopted Christianity, the popular holiday collided with people of faith. In order to appease everyone, the wild debauchery of the early festivals became a preparation of sorts for Lent, the 40 days of penance between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday.  Because Lent required fasting of all but fish, people would feast on all of the meat, eggs, milk, and cheese they had in their homes on the day prior to Ash Wednesday, inspiring the name "Mardi Gras", translated "Fat Tuesday".  The word “carnival,”, also closely related to Mardi Gras festivities, is similarly rooted in Christian tradition. In early Latin, carnelevarium means to take away meat - hence the fasting of lent.  Read More about History of Mardi Gras Celebrations »
